A 6-year-old girl is presently a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital after she was found unconscious and submerged in a swamp at her home. The child resides at Goed Bananen Land, East Canje Berbice.
It was reported that the child lives with her 25-year-old mother, a housewife; and her grandparents, who also live at the said address but in a separate house.
Information received that the child’s mother and father are separated but the father was given visitation rights to spend time with the child every Sunday.
Yesterday, at about 08:00hrs, the child’s father contacted the mother and made arrangements to collect the child. According to the mother, she prepared the child for her father to pick her up and left her in the yard playing.
At the time, the child’s grandmother was at her home doing house chores and last saw her about 11:30hrs.
However, about 12:30hrs when the grandfather made checks for her he did not find her.
As a result, a search party was immediately formed by relatives and friends who combed the entire area. At around, 14:00hrs, during the search, the child’s grandfather found her submerged in a swampy area, about 500 feet away from the house. She was covered in mud.
She was subsequently picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where she was seen and examined by a doctor. She is currently a patient at the hospital and is undergoing treatment.
Investigations are ongoing.
