DEPARMENT STORE DESTROYED BY SUNDAY NIGHT FIRE; PARTS OF REGENT STREET TO BE CLOSED

A department store on Sunday night became engulfed in flames for reasons still unknown. According to Fire Chief Marlon Gentle on the scene, the fire department received a call after 8pm about a fire in the location.

Gentle registered his dissapointnent with regards to access to fire hydrants. He noted that one of two fire hydrants, was blocked by debris from a nearby construction site.

From all indications, the fire might have been started from the burnt out lot which once housed the Sachi building. That store was ravaged by flames several months ago.

Meanwhile, as a result of a fire which occurred on Regent Street between Camp and Wellington Streets about 20:45 hrs on 2020-11-08, the Guyana Police Force wishes to advise members of the public that in order to facilitate speedy investigations by the Guyana Fire Service, the said area will be closed to vehicular traffic bounded in both east and west directions for the remainder of the 2020-11-08 and on 2020-11-09.

Motorists traversing Regent Street will be diverted at the intersection of Camp Street and the intersection of Wellington Street.

The Guyana Police Force wishes to thank the public for their cooperation.
